Important in MD that the MLIS is one of two professional entry points for public libraries--especially for students with too much debt to jump to grad school. Large number of public library staff have BA or BS and provide wide range of services. These are very rewarding jobs and they become certified through Maryland State Library training as "Library Associates". As LAs, they have access to various tuition reimbursement programs and many go on to get MLIS degrees.
